Virtual Reality is an artificial, 3D environment. Just like the world we see around us, VR is made up of points that can be described by relative X, Y and Z co-ordinates. Two points make a line, three or more points make a plane, etc. Within a VR plane a polygon face is created. This polygon is arranged with other polygons, assigned color, textured, lighted and a VR environment is created. This environment can be as simple as a plain box. Or it can include millions of detailed elements that make up a complex, realistic world where we can "walk" around and look at everything.
Nearly ten years ago, Blackwood Associates, Inc. began using 3D vector-based modeling as part of our on-going exploration of available technologies. Initially used for presenting designs, we now use cutting edge 3D modeling as a design tool.
With 3D models and animations being used in movies, on television shows and commercials, and at theme parks, most everyone has experienced and appreciates the entertainment benefits of this relatively new technology. Now this tool is being used in courtrooms, by publishing agencies, on the web, and by designers of aircraft, automobile, industry and architecture.
3D architectural models and animations allow designers and clients to view a building from inside and out before ground is broken. These virtual tours quickly highlight important elements to key project personnel. Experiencing an interior space allows for the study of spatial relationships, lighting systems, different finishes, color selections, cabinetry and furniture arrangements. Visualization of a building's exterior provides a sense of mass, proportion, and color in relationship to it's environment. Design revisions may be made and studied further, possibly eliminating the need for costly revisions during construction. Upon completion of a design, it may be presented to the public, a student body, developers, prospective tenants, funding agencies, etc..
There are three primary mediums for presenting a 3D architectural model; images, animations, and panoramas.
An image is a still picture, not unlike a traditional architectural rendering. These are typically used to print full-color hard copies. The sample images we have included here are in a .jpg format and can be viewed in a web-browser.
An animation is a series of still images viewed at 12-30 frames per second creating the illusion of movement. This, the most common way of experiencing an architectural VR model, is perceived by the viewer as moving through space and past forms. Animations are usually presented on a CD-ROM or video due to there size. But we have slimmed down some samples for web-based viewing. These animations are in a .avi format and can be viewed with the standard Windows Media Player on your computer.
The panoramas are interactive computer files that allow the viewer to "look around" the room from a fixed point in space. There are two types of sample panoramas included on this site. If you do not have a viewer please click on the respective download button and install as instructed.
