PROJECT AWARDED TO COOPER ASPHALT, INC. OF MILL CREEK, WEST VIRGINIA.

SCOPE OF WORK

This project is part of the safe schools program and is intended at this site to make school bus access to both Tygart Valley High School and George Ward Elementary School better and allow safer access onto WV State Route 250. The work is comprised of the construction of a new bus loop roadway between the two schools to allow bus staging at the rear of the high school and egress of the buses onto Route 250 from the Elementary school where there is ample site distance for buses pulling out onto the busy highway. Also included in this project is the replacement of the badly deteriorated front concrete side walk along Route 250 between portions of the high school complex.

The roadway will be a 10 foot paved width with a stone 2 foot wide stone paved berm  to each side. This road will require excavation to meet present site grades and allow natural drainage to continue un-impeded. There will be some ditch line reconstruction work with the installation of 2 major culverts to allow the passage of water beneath the road bed from existing site drainways. The project will require an engineered road subgrade with stone base and stabilization fabric, and a final paving section for an approximate distance of 1200 feet behind the high school’s athletic field complex. In preparation of this road there is a steel pipe batting cage frame that requires relocation to allow proper road alignment, as well as fencing modifications to relocate a gated access, and minor ditch regrading/ reorientation.

The sidewalk is a direct replacement of the current sidewalk which has been in service for over 50 years and is approximately 310 feet in length. The walk has become rough and uneven due to age as well as salt attack from the many nearby highway treatments over the past winters. Work will involve the total demolition of the current walkway beginning at the newer school addition and ending in front of the school’s gymnasium/classroom building. Drawings and specifications have been developed to indicate the work needed to install both the road and the walkway including necessary demolition and reseeding.

Three add alternates are to be priced in addition to the base bid of the work described above, and are as follows:

  • Alt. 1 – Provide stone paving in the rear of the high school for buses.
  • Alt. 2 – Provide a 12 foot asphaltic concrete road in lieu of 10 feet.
  • Alt. 3 – Remove the grassy island in front of the elementary school and provide a parking area with a curb & walk barrier from the bus loop road.

Type of Contract
Project will be constructed under a single prime contract.

Estimated cost: Unknown at this time
